First Church

In 1908, the first pioneers, being a strong religious group, celebrated their first mass in August of 1908.  The mass was presided by Father Walter Camire, OMI – from Good Fish Lake Mission.  Father LeGoffe, OMI, from the Lac La Biche Mission (Notre Dame des Victoires) offered his services to say Mass once a month in pioneer homes.  However, he indicated that the major feast day would require travel to the Mission until a church could be constructed.

In 1910, Joseph Plamondon and some community members built a log cabin that would serve as a school, chapel and stopping place.  Mass services were then held in this building.

In 1911, the first church was constructed out of logs near what is now known as the Plamondon creek by the spruce trees.  In 1913 the log church was moved to the new village site on land donated by Ernest Plamondon (son of Joseph Plamondon) in the center of town.
